​Course Structure

This accredited course has four modules, including all the theory you need, practical workshops, and a dedicated exam preparation online review. The contents of this course include the following:

① Passivhaus principles & economics (8 h - online)

This on-demand module allows the participant to understand initial Passivhaus concepts, including the five basic principles and the relationship of sustainability with low-energy buildings. In this module, you also will be able to carry out basic economical viability calculations for energy efficiency measures.

② Building thermal envelopes (8 h - day 1)

In this in-class module, you will learn the particularities of the thermal envelope: insulation, air tightness, thermal bridges and window installation. You will have he opportunity to explore materials, components and systems commonly used in Passivhaus construction.

③ Building mechanical services and testing (8 h - day 2)

In the second day of the in-class module, you will learn the aspects of Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system for Passivhaus buildings and typical efficient heating, cooling, and Domestic Hot Water strategies.

In the afternoon, we will carry out several quality assurance workshops with Blower door, thermography, window characterisation and other useful tools.

④Optional Course review and Exam prep (4 h - online)

In this module, you will attend an online Trainer Q&A session and you will carry out a Trial Exam to be fully prepared. Statistically, 94 % of students in this course pass the Exam.

Certified Passivhaus Tradesperson

Join the growing community of construction and trades professionals internationally accredited by the Passive House Institute to use best practices to cost-effectively implement Passive building standards on-site.

The ex­am lasts three hours and con­sists of three parts corresponding with the course modules: Passivhaus basics, building envelope and mechanical services.

The exam has limited seating for 16 people only.

This course is an intuitive first step for main contractors, sub-contractors, project managers & other construction professionals who are interested about moisture control, air tightness, thermal bridging, healthy indoor air, durability, resiliency, and affordability of high-performance buildings.


Your instructor

​​Jesus Menendez

His professional and academic experience includes consultancy, civil engineering, authoring technical papers and articles, course provider and visiting lecturer, and has conducted past research at UK and NZ Universities. He also has a deep knowledge of non-destructive testing and is partnered with Blowerdoor GmbH and Greenteg.

‍Jesus, as the director of Zero Energy, provides Passivhaus building certification, testing and training services to the building sector worldwide. Before setting up the company, Jesus worked as a structural engineer for CLT and Timber Frame structures. The connection to Passivhaus came with completing a PhD in Low-energy and Passivhaus Timber Frame Buildings.
